From niche product to market juggernaut

The exchange-traded fund (“ETF”) has undergone a profound transformation over the last 30 years, evolving from a niche financial instrument to a $15 trillion market juggernaut. While passive strategies remain the cornerstone of the industry, the landscape has expanded significantly. This explosive growth brings new challenges.

Explosive growth, continued closures

Annual US ETF launches and closures as of August 31 2026

In 2026, the ETF market is poised to have the most number of ETF launches ever, with more than 1,000 launched through the end of August. But while new launches are arriving thick and fast, the number of closures is also growing as more strategies fail to gain traction with investors. Through August, ETF closures in 2026 had already eclipsed the number of closures in the entirety of 2025 and are on pace to surpass the 270 fund closures from 2020.

Three strategies for today’s ETF market

To thrive in today’s environment, ETF issuers must adopt a more disciplined, integrated approach across the product lifecycle. Ultimately, sustainable growth is driven not just by launch momentum, but by the coordinated alignment of product design and distribution to connect with investors in a maturing  and highly competitive marketplace.

Built on VettaFi’s deep expertise partnering with issuers to build and grow innovative indexed ETF strategies, our latest white paper explores three key strategies that can power long-term success in today’s competitive landscape.
